KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent – Opposition Leader Arnhim Eustace says he doesn’t need any lecture from Buccament Bay Resort investor Dave Ames on the importance of tourism to the economy but would appreciate if his company, Harlequin Resorts, pays its workers.
“I want to make it plain and I make no apologies to anybody when it comes to matters of that sort (non-payment of wages). And most of all, I don’t want any lecture from Mr. Ames on what the impact of tourism is and can be for this country. I know it very well, better than him,” Eustace said Monday during his weekly radio programmes.
His comments came in response to Ames’s statement in a recent interview with Searchlight newspaper in which Ames said he was surprised that Eustace did not contact him about his “concerns”.
Eustace and other members of the New Democratic Party and callers to radio discussion programmes here have complained about the late or non-payment of wages to some workers at the resort.
“This is what I am upset about. My point is, I actually rang my lawyer Sam Commissiong and I said to him ‘Why doesn’t this man ring me? Why doesn’t he come here and meet the workers here?
He is more than welcome to come here; I would love to show him around,” Searchlight quotes Ames as saying.
According to the newspaper, Ames said in a press statement that Eustace and Central Kingstown representative St Clair Leacock were raising “alarmist concerns”, based on information received from persons Ames described as illegal “expats.”

“Mr. Eustace, an economist is quoted as saying ‘the situation has implications for the nation’s reputation and foreign investment here.’ Well he is quite correct; as a direct result of such inaccuracies as are being spread at the moment by himself and his peers, there may well be future implications for foreign investment,” said Ames, who also told the newspaper he had acquired Vincentian citizenship.
But Eustace said that the NDP in its election manifesto made it plain that tourism is a major priority because of its benefits to the local economy.
“So I don’t need to be told about that. … I am fully aware of what that could be,” Eustace said.
“Pay the people their money. That is what I am asking for. And I am saying to the government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, you have a Labour Department, intervene.
“There are conciliatory processes and other processes that you can go through to make sure that people are properly treated. … That is what they are for — to assist people who want to know what their rights are and who have been wronged by their employers.”
Eustace reemphasised the NDP’s view that this country needs foreign investment and must create a welcoming climate.
“But when foreign investors come, they must live up to their obligations and pay the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. That is what I am talking about. … So all those who want to take it and turn it into some political football, they can go ahead.”
He, however, said that while foreign investors must be encouraged, all employers — foreign or local – “have an obligation to make your payments to the people who work for you and that is very, very important and very fundamental.
“People have to live. They have their mortgages to pay, many of them are trying to build a home, many of them have their children in school and they have to be paid.
“And there is no excuse to tell me the local contractor should be paying when in some case the local contractor himself has not been paid by the inventors,” Eustace said.
Government senator, Julian Francis, recently said that the Buccament Bay project has to be protected.
He suggested that some construction workers are not being paid on time because of the manner in which contractors manage the system that allow them to access funds based on the status of the work for which they have been contracted.
Can anybody believe anything this government says? I don’t think so! Where are the investigative reporters? Why don’t they talk to the contractors and then the workers so SVG nationals know the truth. Are they also being controlled by Ralph?

We must make sure whoever takes over the project is properly funded and capable of paying.

Mr.Ames is out of place and very unprofessional to speak about Mr. Eustace in such a manner. As a business man, his approach should be different. He needs the support of both Govt. and opposition for the success of his business even if is just for public relations.
He should have reached out to Mr. Eustace in the begining to get his support for the project, for governments come and governments go. What if the NDP were to form government tomorrow? On the other side, Mr. Eustace should seek to have a warm relationship with Buccament and all other major employers in SVG, because if he forms government tomorrow, he will need to work with them in the interest of national developement.
In the USA, business deals with both opposition and government and vice vesa, because they all need each other. As leaders in these small Islands, we need to put petit politics aside when dealing with these important issues.

In addition, it has led to local INVESTORS, like the GREAVES, to BUILD a MAJOR SUPERMARKET in the VICINITY, which will lead to more VINCENTIANS being EMPLOYED, and it will lead to small business owners and farmers to do business with the GREAVES just like what has been taking place at the Buccament Bay Resort.
This RESORT can only be a POSITIVE DEVELOPMENT for SVG, especially the MAINLAND.
If Mr. Eustace truly wants to know what is going on at the resort, he would have called Mr. Ames and set up a meeting with him. Moreover, he could have requested to visit the resort and speak to Vincentians who work there to find out how they are being treated or if they’re being paid.
Moreover, when you have Nigel Stephenson, an NDP parliamentarian, making an OUTRAGEOUS statement like “I want to say that I believe that what is taking place in Buccama is modern day slavery” with the BLESSING of Mr. Eustace, because he has not REPRIMANDED HIM or DISTANCE his PARTY from that remark, you’re only ENCOURAGING KNUCKLEHEADS out there to believe that GARBAGE, which can lead to NEGATIVE backlashes against the resort.
Moreover, when you have KENTON CHANCE, who create these SENSATIONALIZED HEADLINES, while sitting at his computer/laptop in the safe haven of Taiwan, which he knows are UNADULTERATED NONSENSE, as in the headline “‘Modern-day slavery’ at Buccament Resort – MP,” and know they can only have a NEGATIVE IMPACT on this BLESSED NATION and the resort, but still went ahead with them nevertheless, sometimes you wonder if something is REALLY MENTALLY WRONG with some of our people.

FIRSTLY no-one knows how much has been spent on the build at BB as the accounts are not available and there has been no clear evidence of how much has been spent – only verbal figures quoted by mr ames. secondly HE has not invested this- the people who have bought into the concept , some 6000+ people if harlequin are to believed have invested. IT is their money that is being spent (on anything and everything with no accounts to show how their investment is being utilised) has ames used his own money at all?? if yes, lets have some proof. his uk company albeit owned by his family have taken millions in commission. have they used to this to assist with the construction of any of the resorts/ pay bills/ fight court cases/ buy airplanes etc etc etc. this whole debacle can be easily stopped with one simple item. the accounts/bank statements for harlequin svg/st lucis/barbados etc etc that show harlequin are well funded and in a position to pay employees/contractors/ build the rest of BB and all the other resorts that to date have not had any meaningful progress in terms of build. nothing at any of them apart from some part built show homes??? Workers go to the Labour Dept. Labour Dept. direct the employers (local contractors) to pay the workers.
If local contractors don’t/can’t pay workers, sell off their assets to pay the outstanding wages to the workers.

Mr. Ames is not responsibility for workers pay if he hire a contractor and contractor don’t pay their workers…It have a legal channel for workers to vent their voices and there is the place that Mr. Eustace should send them…. Did Eustace stand up to the IMF and the WORLD BANK on a host of decisions that this government took to help the economy and the forward progress of St. Vincent and Grenadines?

That said; I am suggesting that Mr. Eustace takes up Mr. Ames offer. Let him go on a fact-finding tour of the Buccament Bay Resort. Moreover, I am suggesting that he speak to the hundreds of Vincentians who are currently employed at that resort. Ask them if they are being paid instead of getting on the radio like a LUNATIC EXPRESSING views that are not WORTHY of a worker working at a mauby shop much less a person looking to become the PRIME MINISTER of this BLESSED nation.
That said; my vision of SVG is for this BLESSED NATION to get a COMPETENT OPPOSITION LEADER and a COMPETENT OPPOSITION PARTY that can actually ARTICULATE VIEWS that are INSTRUCTIVE and INSIGHT instead of sounding like a bunch of LOUDMOUTHS in a RUM SHOP. Moreover, one that is not about HOODWINKING the PUBLIC with their RABBLE ROUSING, SCAREMONGERING and NEGATIVE PROPAGANDA to convince them that they’re a PARTY ready to govern; one that has an OPPOSITION PARTY that has an ALTERNATIVE PLAN to DEVELOP and MOVE this NATION forward. In addition, one that has an OPPOSITION LEADER who is not a COWARD and is a GENUINE LEADER. One that has an OPPOSITION PARTY that doesn’t play PARTISAN POLITICS with every SINGLE ISSUE; One that has an OPPOSITION PARTY who is not AFRAID and is MATURE ENOUGH to GIVE CREDIT to the GOVERNING PARTY when they have done good things for the forward development of the people and the country. One that has an OPPOSITION LEADER who doesn’t LIE to the people about a carnival event that took place in a constituency on the day that an elected parliamentarian of his party decides to opened a constituency office on the same say.

Bottom line, Eustace has a point here – The Resort needs to pay who all they owe, this is a legitimate political issue. The Resort needs to pay it debts, both the sub-contractors and the resort employees. The Labour Dept. (government) needs to get involved. The ULP administration needs to address this issue properly.
BTW – do all the people who used to champion workers rights – Mike, Noel, Ralph, Blazer, Burns, Fitz (Jones), and the rest of them – do they care that the people dem ain’ getting paid? Hypocrites.

In case you are not aware, Dr. RALPH GONSALVES was NEVER SELECTED to become PRIME MINISTER unlike Mr. Eustace. Dr. Gonsalves was ELECTED by the PEOPLE to be the PRIME MINISTER of this BLESSED NATION.
In the case of Eustace, he was SELECTED by James Mitchell to serve out his shortened term as PRIME MINISTER for SIX MONTHS.
After serving SIX MONTHS as PRIME MINISTER, Arnhim Eustace had an OPPORTUNITY to PROVE that he was WORTHY of his SELECTION by James Mitchell when he LED the NDP against the ULP, LED by Dr. Gonsalves, in the general election of 2001. Well, the Arnhim Eustace led NDP received a TRASHING from the Dr. Gonsalves led ULP, 12 – 3.
This has been the case for the past three general election; Arnhim Eustace INABILITY as LEADER to LEAD his PARTY to VICTORY against the Dr. Gonsalves led ULP.
Arnhim Eustace is the only leader that I know of who has LOST THREE CONSECUTIVE GENERAL ELECTIONS as LEADER of a MASS POLITICAL PARTY and still is at the HELM of that party. He will hold the record of LOSING 4 CONSECUTIVE GENERAL ELECTIONS of a MASS POLITICAL PARTY when the NDP is DEFEATED, again, by the ULP in the 2015 general election.
This only MEANS that the NDP has NO ONE CAPABLE of LEADING that party but Arnhim Eustace.
In other words, the NDP is LACKING in LEADERSHIP at the HIGHEST LEVEL and is most DEFINITELY LACKING YOUNG CANDIDATES, who are BRIGHT, CHARISMATIC, KNOWLEDGEABLE and have DEMONSTRATED LEADERSHIP QUALITIES, that Mr. Eustace can GROOM to one day LEAD the PARTY in a general election.
In closing, expect to see Arnhim Eustace remaining the LEADER of the NDP for a fifth CONSECUTIVE TERM after losing again to the Dr. Gonsalves led ULP in the general election of 2015.
Of course, my hope is that Mr. Eustace will not remind as leader, because I want a STRONG OPPOSITION PARTY.

She was brought up on charges, relating to her job, and was sent on LEAVE at HALF pay. She eventually resigned from her job as Director of Communications and then was assigned by the NDP to become its ASSISTANT GENERAL SECRETARY. She was then elevated to a position of SENATOR in the HOUSE of ASSEMBLY by the LEADER of the OPPOSITION, Mr. Arnhim Eustace.
Her MERCURIAL RISE in POLITICS was ASTONISHING.
However, just like EVERYTHING in LIFE, when there is a HIGH, there is LIKELY to be a LOW, and ANESIA BAPTISTE came CRASHING BACK to EARTH when the same party and LEADER, who PRAISED her and elevated her to a senatorial position in the House of Parliament, above more qualified persons, DISMISSED her as senator.
So not only was she out of a JOB as the COMMUNICATION DIRECTOR in the TOURISM MINISTRY, she was also out of a JOB as a SENATOR in the House of Parliament.
All this came to PAST because of her POLITICS.
This is why I said, DO NOT PLAY POLITICS with your JOB because you just might REGRET IT.
The NDP cannot pay her bills now nor can the ULP, but she RISKED it all for POLITICS.
